I believe it can be summarised in a word, "the subconscious mind".
If you read "the power of your subconscious mind" by Joseph Murphy you would know what I mean.
The subconscious mind can simply be described as the dark room where your outer life do its evolution, everything that you see for example will be in your subconscious mind affecting you whether it's a positive or a negative thing.
The subconscious mind can also be described as a four-year-old child, it obeys what you want him to do, for example, I used to read my colleagues negative posts on Facebook and I started to tell myself that tests are going to be difficult,I kept on believing that I shall fail in two subjects,and guess what,it really happened! After reading these posts it affected me negatively and I failed, unfortunately my subconscious mind helped me in making it true.
So the problem is that media is using this weapon to make people believe in what they want them to believe in,from believing that being pretty is only about having good curves and walking half naked to believing that what people say in news is always right.
People should use their minds instead of using what they learnt from TV.
I have to say that it's really a big topic but I hope my answer is sufficient.
